Treating Headaches Caused by TMD

If you experience painful, chronic headaches that your doctor has been unable to diagnose, there is a chance you may be suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). This all-too-common disorder involves a delicate jaw joint that is intimately connected with your back, shoulders, and neck muscles. When this jaw joint is even slightly displaced, a wide range of painful symptoms can occur throughout your entire body. The headaches caused by this disorder often have symptoms that are startlingly similar to migraines, which is why they are sometimes referred to as TMD migraines.

The neuromuscular dentists at Willow Dental can diagnose you for TMD using a special device called a TENS unit that relaxes your jaw muscles and helps locate your jaw’s ideal position. If it is determined that your jaw is out of alignment, a number of procedures might be used to treat your condition, including:

Orthotics – An orthotic device can help gradually reposition your jaw’s alignment.
Restorations Porcelain veneers, dental crowns, and dental bridges can be used to align your bite and keep your jaw in the correct position.
Orthodontics – By re-aligning your teeth and correcting your bite, braces can also fix your jaw position. Our office offers Bioliners™ clear braces aligners for patients who are hesitant about wearing traditional braces.

If you suffer from painful migraine-like headaches and would like to be examined for TMD, please contact our experienced Toronto neuromuscular dentist at Willow Dental today to schedule a consultation.
