Many patients ask about options for replacing missing teeth. Among their questions are some inquiring about dental implants vs. dentures. These two options have little in common beyond replacing missing teeth.
Dental implants are an extremely effective method to replace missing teeth. There are several phases to the procedure. First, our Toronto cosmetic dentists will insert an implant consisting of a titanium post into your jawbone. Over a period of several months, your jawbone will grow around the implant, securing it in place. Once this process has been completed, an abutment will be attached to the implant and a tooth crown will be placed on the abutment to function as a false tooth.
Dental implants offer several important benefits over other restorations such as
dentures. It is a permanent restoration, and with the proper care, should not need replacement. Unlike dentures, there is no potential for slippage, eliminating problems speaking and eating that are typically associated with dentures. Most importantly, dental implants look and function exactly like your natural teeth.
While we offer dentures, we generally do not recommend them unless you are not a suitable candidate for dental implants. In cases where you do not have sufficient jawbone structure to support an implant, dentures provide an effective alternative. We offer both full and partial dentures. Our Toronto cosmetic dentists will recommend the appropriate option to address your dental needs.
